Alfred Joseph A.J. Casson

1898-1992

Alfred Joseph Casson developed a highly individual vision of the Ontario landscape, defined by structural clarity, controlled geometry and a refined sensitivity to colour. The youngest artist to join the Group of Seven, in 1926, he extended the group’s exploration of the Canadian landscape toward the quieter, inhabited environments of southern Ontario.

Villages, houses, forests and cultivated land recur throughout his work, transformed through a process of formal simplification into carefully ordered compositions. In contrast to the monumental wilderness favoured by several of his contemporaries, Casson turned repeatedly to places shaped by human presence, finding pictorial complexity in the relationship between architecture and the natural environment.

His parallel career in commercial design, together with his longstanding engagement with watercolour, reinforced the precision and economy of his visual language. Across painting and works on paper, Casson brought a distinctive sense of order to the Canadian landscape tradition, balancing observation with an increasingly distilled approach to form.
